Incident Response Before Modern Apps

When first setting up monitoring services in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, it was not as easy as setting up an account with Pingdom (started in 2005) or UptimeRobot (started in 2010). Further, there were not quality and widespread apps like PagerDuty and OpsGenie to handle what happens after an issue is detected. While Dan has been on call for over 20 years and has since administered all the above, it used to be that content checks were more complicated and creating continuous alerts meant a creative custom configuration and/or significant expenses. While the industry has progressed tremendously, early on there were countless nights where Dan was awoken in the night and spent hours focused on uptime and performance of client applications and services by resolving server issues, mitigating DDoS attacks, among many other possibilities.
